Here is the question: why should people exercise? The answer is simple: because exercise helps you to stay younger, feel better, it is good for the mind and drastically reduces some of the most common conditions such as obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease etc.
In the last few decades there has been a rise in these types of conditions and this is due both to lack of exercise and poor nutrition, where by “poor” I don’t mean not eating enough, but rather eating too much of the wrong things.
Some people are naturally active and therefore, for them exercising comes easy. Others prefer sitting on the couch and watch a movie, play video games, sleep or eat. The second group of people need a strong motivation to get up and do some movement.
Many times I hear people saying: “Yeh, I should go to the gym, but now I have no money/time/I am too old/I want to get a bit fitter first/I can’t do it…”. Actually, you don’t need money, you don’t have necessarily to join a gym, you can exercise in the park or at home. As for time, you don’t need that much of that either, in fact the ACMS (American College of Medicine and Sport) recommend 150 minutes of activity a week, which is 30 minutes a day 5 times a week. And if you really don’t have half an hour, you could even break those 30 minutes in two or three mini sessions of 15 or 10 minutes. Now. do you think you could manage that?
As for age, exercise is for everybody. The young will develop flexibility, healthy hearts and lungs and will develop the habit of engaging in sports or any sort of physical activity. The older will keep their weight under control, muscles and bones will get stronger (very important especially if you are an older woman) and they will prevent suffering from obesity, diabetes, heart or mobility problems.
Ah, and there is no such thing as “I want to get a bit fitter first”, you will get fitter if you start taking some action. And I can guarantee that, if you really apply yourself, the results will come.
I know it is not easy, but a long walk starts with the first step…In this case, the first step is to decide if you really want to change.
So take that step, I will be walking with you.
