In some circumstances success happens because of luck, in others success is the result of our hard work.
When it comes to fitness, luck doesn’t really play much part.
To achieve what you want to achieve, weather that is looking 5 kg or 20 kg, building muscles, being able to run for the bus without feeling that your heart is popping out of your chest or being able to bend down and play with your children, after you decided that you really want to do something about it, you need to accept that you will achieve your goal only if you keep in mind these three words: patience, discipline and determination.
Let’s have a look at this in more detail:
Patience: things will not change from one day to the other, you will not loose 20 kg in a month (if anyone ever says that to you, they are not serious professionals and the only things that will be lighter at the end of your cycle will be your pockets). You have to be patient, results will come in the end and you will be able to see them in as little as one month, with increasing improvements over few months, maybe it will even take one year to reach the final result. But what is a month or a year especially when you have been trying all your life? Quick fixes will give you quick relapses, a slow, steady improvement may change your life.
Discipline: you need to be consistent. Often people enroll at the gym but then find dozens of excuses not to go. They go every now and then, do a bit of this and a bit of that, five minutes on the treadmill, 5 on the bike, couple of crunches … then they go out and reward themselves with a big burger and chips. I am afraid this will not take you too far. If you want to see results, you will have to discipline yourself: go for a 30 minutes walk twice a day, workout at the gym for one hour, exercise at home every day… Whatever rocks your boat but, when you have a program, stick to it. Also, very important, be aware of what you eat, start considering food such as chocolate, cakes, burgers, pizza, fizzy drinks, wine etc. as treats to have from time to time, even better, rewards to have when you reach a small goal, rather than making them part of your daily diet.
Determination: Sometimes you may feel like giving up, maybe you are discouraged because it seems you are not getting the results you expect, maybe people will try to put you off. It can happen but try to acknowledge the feeling, don’t be afraid to fail, think about where you want to be and stand up again, be determined that you will get there no matter what’
Always keep this in mind and before you know it you will be enjoying the fruits of your hard work.
